What is work clothing?

The definition of workwear
Work clothing is clothing that is worn while exercising a profession. The Tax Authorities use a specific definition: work clothing is clothing that is almost exclusively suitable for use during work, or clothing with a clearly visible company logo of at least 70 cm². In principle, clothing that can also be worn outside working hours is not considered work clothing.
In practice the definition is broader. Workwear includes all clothing specifically designed for use in the workplace: from a simple polo shirt with a company logo to certified flame-retardant overalls. What they have in common is that they are made with the requirements of the workplace in mind: functionality, safety, durability and recognisability.
What is typical work clothing?
Typical work clothing varies by sector and profession, but there are a number of garments that are common in almost all sectors. Work trousers with functional pockets and reinforcements in vulnerable areas are the most typical work garment. A polo shirt or T-shirt with a company logo is the standard outerwear in many sectors.
Other typical work clothing items are the overalls or work jacket, the softshell or fleece for outdoor work, the body warmer for the in-between season and the safety jacket or high visibility work clothing for work on the road or in hazardous locations. Specific clothing items such as chef coats, aprons and healthcare polo shirts are common in healthcare and catering.
Workwear versus corporate clothing
Corporate clothing is another term that is often used. Corporate clothing refers to clothing provided by a company to employees, often with a company logo or in the organization's corporate colors. Workwear and corporate clothing largely overlap, but corporate clothing places more emphasis on the brand identity of the organization.
The role of work clothing in recognisability and team identity
Work clothing plays an important role in the recognizability of employees. Customers, visitors and colleagues immediately know who to address when employees wear recognizable work clothing. This applies to a security guard at an entrance, a technician at a customer's home or a nurse in the department.
Work clothing also strengthens the feeling of unity within a team. If everyone wears the same thing, differences fade into the background and the team takes center stage.
