What is the difference between work clothes and uniforms?

Wat is het verschil tussen werkkleding en uniformen?
KennisJul 16, 20262 min read

Work clothes and uniforms are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are not the same. Both are worn during work, but they serve a different purpose and apply in different contexts. In this article we explain the difference and when each applies.

What is work clothing?

Work clothing is all clothing that is specially designed for use in the workplace. The emphasis is on functionality: the clothing must fit the demands of the job, be resistant to wear and tear and in many cases also provide protection. Think of work trousers with Cordura reinforcements, breathable T-shirts for outdoor work or certified safety clothing. View the full range at workwear page of Tricorp.

Work clothing does not necessarily have to be uniform. Two employees from the same company may wear different items of clothing that both qualify as workwear, depending on their position and associated clothing requirements.

What is a uniform?

A uniform is a fixed set of clothing that is worn in the same way by all employees of an organization or department. The purpose of a uniform is recognisability and unity: everyone looks the same, regardless of rank or position. Uniforms are widely used by police, fire brigades, military personnel, airline personnel and hospital personnel.

A uniform is always work clothing, but work clothing is not always a uniform. A construction worker wears work clothes, but no uniform. A pilot wears a uniform that also functions as work clothes.

What is the difference in practice?

The main difference is in the degree of standardization and the emphasis on representativeness. Work clothing is primarily functional and may differ per employee or position. A uniform is standardized and has a highly representative character: it expresses the identity of the organization and makes employees immediately recognizable to the outside world.

In practice the distinction decreases. More and more companies are opting for work clothing that is both functional and representative: clothing that works well in the workplace and at the same time gives a clear and professional appearance to the entire team.
