THE HISTORY OF BLUE JEANS

Levi Strauss moved to America in 1847. The land of the mines and the gold rush. Here Levi made trousers (waist overalls) from sailcloth for the miners. The tarpaulin ran out and Strauss had to look for an alternative. Levi Strauss chose strong cotton (with a twill weft) called 'Serge de Nîmes'. The twill from Nîmes was corrupted into 'de Nîmes' and the well-known 'denim'.

It turned out that the trouser pockets could not withstand the rough work of the miners and so Levi looked for a solution. And he found that solution in a letter from tailor Jacob Davis. Jacob sent Strauss a letter in 1872 suggesting the use of rivets to strengthen the trouser pockets. Strauss and Davis jointly applied for the patent on the first denim and that was the start of the first jeans brand: Levi Strauss & Co.

BLUE JEANS

Jeans are also called blue jeans mentioned. This name is also a corruption. The warp thread of the denim was colored with the dye 'bleu de Gênes' and this was soon corrupted into 'blue jeans'. The color of the jeans is so characteristic that jeans are often referred to as 'blue jeans'. The denim is also so connected to the jeans that 'denim' is also used to describe the jeans to indicate. The Dutch word 'spijkerbroek' owes the jeans to the rivets (rivets), which are also called nails.

THE CREATION OF THE DENIM PANTS

The classic model of the first denim changed during the Second World War: the waist overalls gave way to the predecessor of the current generation of jeans. The American Navy also fell under the spell of blue jeans: men also wore these work trousers in their spare time and turned the jeans into a fashion item. And because American soldiers fought in Europe, the jeans also became known in Europe.

REBELLY

The new fashion item was not immediately welcomed with open arms. The old workhorse was used by hippies and... nozems was welcomed with open arms and that created the rebellious image of the work trousers. Jeans were therefore sold 'under the counter' to the first enthusiasts.

FASHION ITEM

The jeans are no longer just one work trousers. And it denim is no longer reserved for the most rebellious groups and subgroups. The indestructible and comfortable denim is still popular as work trousers, a rebellious statement and a fashion item. The classic 5 pocket model hasn't changed much since its introduction, but the number of different washes (e.g stone wash) and finishes have increased significantly under the influence of fashion.

TRICORP

The story of Levi Strauss is also the story of Tricorp: the making of work clothes that enables professionals to get the best out of every working day.
