EN 17353: improved visibility in medium risk situations

EN 17353: verbeterde zichtbaarheid in medium risk situaties
NormeringenNov 20, 20252 min read

When you work in situations where increased visibility is required, the EN 17353 standard offers a solution. This standard is intended for professionals who work in medium-risk environments, such as logistics or on closed construction sites. However, the standard is not designed for high-risk situations, such as working on construction sites along fast-moving traffic. Clothing with the EN ISO 20471 standard is made mandatory.

Different types

The EN 17353 standard is divided into three categories based on the material used and the required surfaces.

Type A:

For type A, the work clothing consists partly of fluorescent material with a minimum surface area of 0.24 m². This ensures increased visibility in daylight and makes this clothing suitable for professionals who only work during the day. The clothing has 360 degrees of fluorescent material all around, but this is not necessarily strapping. An example of this is work clothing for personnel in logistics or construction sites.

Type B:

Type B work clothing consists partly of reflective material and is divided into type B2 and type B3, with a safety expert determining which type is needed for each profession. With type B2 there is a minimum area of 0.018 m² of reflective material around the limbs, making movement more visible. With type B3 there is a minimum area of 0.08 m² of reflective material with at least 2 centimeters of strapping around the torso, which clearly indicates the presence of a person. This clothing is used, for example, by employees in logistics, warehouses and production environments, where visibility in twilight or indoor spaces is important. At Tricorp Workwear we do offer type B2 work clothing, but not type B3.

Type AB:

Type AB combines fluorescent and reflective material and is suitable for situations where employees actively participate in road traffic, but do not work in immediate high-risk zones. This type of work clothing offers good visibility both during the day and in the dark.

The EN 17353 standard therefore offers a suitable solution for work clothing in medium-risk situations. Depending on the type A, B or AB, the clothing can be tailored to the specific circumstances and working hours of the professional.
